DRAGON QUEST app good for
Several months back I set out on a quest to purchase and conquer all the Final Fantasy games on the App Store then write a review for each, and thats exactly what I did. Needless to say it was one of the most exciting and fulfilling gaming experiences Ive ever had in my 26 years of life. In the interim they finally added FF9 to the mix, and though I still have yet to embark on that journey, (mostly due to the software limitations of my current device) I plan to do so very soon.
That being said I decided to take a short break from the FF series to pursue other great video games, none of which brought me the viscerally nostalgic and heart-pounding joy that Final Fantasy has (Crashlands and Dont Starve to be the only exceptions). Thats when I remembered seeing the DRAGON QUEST series all those times I went perusing through the vast library of Square Enix games, so I decided to pull the trigger, and I gotta say...WOW!!!
Last week I purchased 1-5 all at once and tonight I finally beat the first. While some would argue that the game probably hasnt aged well in its 30 year lifespan due to the very simplistic combat and extremely short story line (5-10 hours), I would have to argue that pound for pound, its even better than the first FF! The simplistic one-on-one battles give a real sense of intimacy and excitement, and given the fact that all the encounters are in first person as opposed to third person like with Final Fantasy really adds to said excitement. And while there are certain aspects Ive found to have aged a little less gracefully than others like the limited inventory, the entire package is an absolute masterpiece (and Im really digging the old English text as well)
All in all, even though the DQ franchise never got the exposure and recognition in America it truly deserved, no doubt mostly due to the fact it got steam rolled by Final Fantasy, it has been a major hit and gaming staple in Japan for the last 30 years and still remains so to this day, and Im proud to say that Ive officially jumped on that band wagon!!!!! Next stop, DRAGON QUEST 2‼️‼️
Fantastic reboot of the classic RPG.
This ranks up there as one of my favorite video games of all time - playing the original on NES helped me learn to read as a kid. My dad and I spent countless hours leveling up and trying to solve the games puzzles and quests.
As an old-school DQ fan, I loved this version. Nice, revised graphics, Middle English text (like the NES v), and Koichi Sugiyamas excellent, familiar score. It definitely seems like this version was designed for fans of the original. Im not sure how it would feel approaching it freshly, having not played the NES version. Its definitely the game that launched an amazing video RPG franchise, and is in many ways an early template for what would follow. I think its best appreciated when taken that way.
I appreciated how true this version was to the original NES version, however, I felt there were a few downsides in the translation: the monster names were sort of weird and different (what is a Prestidigitator? Thats the new name for the creature that used to be called just "Magician"). That was my only major qualm.
At times, some of the dialogue seemed a little overwrought and long-winded. But its apparent that the translation team had some fun with this - the game has a good sense of humor.
This is a port of the feature phone remake of the GBC remake of my first RPG on the NES I ever played. So, it has all of the map changes and shop changes present in the GBC version. But it is still a classic RPG with great controls and visuals. My only wish is that it would have the same iCloud save feature like DQIV and DQVIII.
So I bought this game and it was pretty awesome now after I finish from this game i will go and buy DRAGON QUEST 2
The music is so good bring back memories from the anime DRAGON QUEST that I watched long time ago
Very interesting indeed
You do not need to be a hard core RPG runner to enjoy this game anymore. I beat this in one sitting while sick. The dungeons have changed mildly from the original Dragon Warrior. The battle system, bugs, glitches, graphics, and memory manipulation are updated for an improved run. The update for iOS makes for longer speed running sessions. The issue if you want to speed run this game will be 2 places needed for grinding.
An excellent game that sparked an entire genre of games and made one half of Square Enix a household name.
And at the price, its a steal.
Some bad moments
This is one of my favorite games from my childhood. Thats why Im upset about this. I paid money to play and after I saved and exited the app everything was fine. Tried playing today, a day later and now all it does is force close. Id like for this to be fixed or a refund or something. Im heavily disappointed.
within the first town, i now had 2 crashes within 3 minutes. annoying
Classic JRPG but the lack of being able to use your own music is a huge deal. Dont get me wrong whats here is good. But a lot of the game is grinding for XP. Hearing the same two tones and a few seconds of another song gets more tiring than the grinding. Hope square patches it.
Great port! Highly recommend if you are into retro RPGs. I encountered no bugs what so ever.
The controls are good and the game was fun. Now starting number 2
As someone who spent hours upon hours playing the original classic on the NES, I find this port of the game to be an incredible remake. Im loving the updated graphics, the Olde English dialogues and the full orchestral soundtrack. The most unbelievable part is that this game was $50 originally and has been lovingly revamped and improved upon for $3. If youre a fan of the original, dont miss this one!
