An absolute classic

Aside from a few harmless glitches in the text, a near perfect version of the NES classic---if only Enix had not attempted to Americanize this title 25 years ago, we not have to worry about localization--- the franchise would have sold like madness...

Dragon Quest

Fantastic remake and a great value. Controls are smooth and graphics have cleaned up nicely. Well worth the price for a chance to play a classic RPG.

Buggier than a big bug bugging out on a dune buggy

Weird Bug- I downloaded the game and it caused my entire phone to loose its touchscreen. It became unresponsive and would not move the screen phasing in and out. After removing the game this bug stopped

Great Game

I see in the reviews that people are complaining about how the story is basic -__-. This is the first JRPG ever to be released. It created all the RPG cliches. Buy this if you want to experience one of the first RPGs ever :)

More DQ in NA!!

The Dragon Quest series has been my favorite since Dragon Warrior on the NES. It is nice to have this version on my device. Now, Square Enix: localize more DQ games in the NA market!

Good but...

Definitely a good game without question but like other retro RPGs also experienced this with the first FF game they tell you to do something but there is no way to know which way to go

Pretty cool port

Huge Dragon Quest fan. Graphics look great. Compared to the GBC version, I was happy about a few things and not so happy about some others. Walking - walking speed seems to be a little faster which is good. Maps - A few of the maps were changed which seemed a little needless and really didnt add to the experience. Not terrible though. Just expect to be a little lost on the final castle if youre a return player. Controls - Not bad once you get used to them. I wasnt all that excited about the omission of the search under foot option which has been replaced with shining tiles where items can be found with the action button. It feels a little spoon-fed and takes away from the game. In the original, you had to speak to NPCs to get hints about the location of items that were hidden. Now you can just see them outright. Music - They orchestrated the music. Not sure how I feel about that. I likes the old chiptune sounds. Quicksave - Definitely a convenience and you dont have to use it if you want a a more classic experience. Overall it was a nice experience and worth the $2.99. I still like Dragon Quest III (Dragon Warrior III on GBC) better, although Im skeptical about the omissions made to the iOS version. This one is technically the RPG that started it all and its worth a play through.

Awful Graphics Treatment

Both DQ1 and DQ2 suffer from this issue. It looks as though the images are stretched over my iPhone 6s screen without taking into account the original screen ratio. Thus, some pixels and squished and others are stretched. It gives both games a seriously unprofessional and unmaintained look. Ive heard that other games in the series dont suffer this fate, but because of how these have been handled I will not be purchasing other Dragon Quest games on iOS.

Nonsense gameplay.

Really, every time you die, you lose half your gold? Even if you save!?! LOTS of fun.

Pretty true to the OG NES version

I got the original NES Dragon Warrior with a subscription to Nintendo Power Magazine in, like, 87? 88 maybe? I played the h-e-l-l out of it, it might have been the first game I ever beat on my own. This port is about 80% spot on. The graphics are actually twice as good as the OG. The plot and game play are more or less the same too. I will warn that either the enemies are weaker, the hero is much stronger, or Im just better at 8 bit gaming than I was when I was 10-11yo. The only complaint I had was that; in the original when you left a dungeon all the treasure chests recharged, in this version, once open theyre permanently emptied. But hey, thats a small thing. Over all I enjoyed this thoroughly. If youre an old school Dragon Warrior fan, Im sure you will too!

Love it!

Great game. Easy to beat thanks to the Autosave that lets you save wherever whenever. Glad to have this classic here. Hope more classics come to port like DQ 7. And also others too like Square Enix Valkyrie Profile trilogy.

A true classic

This game is amazing. I cant believe it originally game out in in the late 80s. The gameplay still holds up today. A lot fun. A great adventure. A classic.

Holy crap YES!

Best port of a classic game that Ive ever played. The people crying on here are stupid and have no idea what theyre doing. I have never had a problem with creatures casting sleep... Oh wait, thats because Im either strong enough to take it or I cast fizzle... What a concept. Plus, they added the ability to do quick saves in addition to the traditional saves with the king. Plus, once you get to Cantlin, theres a bank for your gold and items. Either I dont remember the game or they made grinding super easy. Within hours I was already to Rimuldar. The "bosses" give way more than they did in the NES version, like the golem outside Cantlin have 2500 exp. Seriously, this game sticks to its roots with some great updates.

Better than I expected

Its a very faithful translation to the original game that works very well with iOS, not against it. I definitely enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Great Game

I used the iPod Touch (6th generation). I played the game across 3 iOS platforms 8.4, 9.0, and 9.1 It shut down suddenly only twice. The game was a great classical turn-based RPG.

Awesome port

People say this game is lacking many core RPG aspects... But this is pretty much the mother of all modern RPGs. This game may leave people bored with its simplicity, thats what makes this game shine. A truly great game for its time, I would recommend this game to anyone who is a veteran in RPGs and is trying to get back to its roots.

Love!

I never got to play the whole game as a kid though Ive played later titles in the series. Very well done port. Great job Square!

Solid

Very simple old style RPG. The game crashed twice during my ~10 hour playthrough which was unfortunate, but the ability to quick save anywhere made the crashes not too bad. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Glitches

For the most part its good, but at the end of every battle the game freezes and my progress is lost. So its impossible to make it any farther or level up or obtain gold in this game for me. Hence 2 stars. Sorry, SquareEnix.

For 2.99?

This is a great plug, the best version in my opinion Pros: -After adapting to movement, its better than handheld -Autosave and quick save make it easier to grind -A variety of monsters to slay -Walk out princess literally in arms -Music is okay, repetitive in battles -Spells make battle easier and take a little more strategy than "attack"->"attack"->"attack" Cons -It crashed twice for me,but it auto saves -Kind of hard to get into dialogue,I have no idea how people found out how to get in Galens grave Overall, for 2.99, this game is a great experience for people looking for a iOS RPG, or return players Tip:To adjust to the walking system, touch your character then side in the direction you want to go
